Monthly Message- Battlefield of the Mind

January 22, 2011

Ephesians 6:12 says, “This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.” We are in a battle peeps! The battle is being raged in our minds. The devil figures that the easiest way to defeat us is from the inside out. He will plant little bugs in our heads, that if left unattended, could grow into giant bombs that could destroy our lives.

In high school it would have been very easy for me to fall into the same thinking that many of my classmates feel into. I am not worthy enough, or maybe I am not doing enough to fit in. The ones that had this negative outlook about themselves ended up going down a dark and lonely road. I stayed true to my God, and lived a life that would honor him. I didn’t let Satan rule my mind!

In 2 Corinthians 10: 4-5 the Bible talks about the weapons we use in this battle of the brain. “The weapons I fight with are not the weapons the world uses. In fact, it is just the opposite. My weapons have the power of God to destroy the camps of the enemy. I destroy every claim and every reason that keeps people from knowing God. I keep every thought under control in order to make it obey Christ.” Listen we can not win this war by ourselves. I do not have enough muscles in my body to move Satan one inch, however, when we throw these Godly weapons in the arena it is a new ballgame. Paul is telling us to use the weapons that God has given us to handcuff the ploys of the devil. So let us fall on our knees and wage war. For our minds were given to us by God, we should not hand it over to the evil one!

Explore the Bible

October 8, 2010

Why do they call it Bible Study? I don’t know about you, but I hated to study when I was in school. Long hours of repeating things over and over again until you got it memorized. That is not very appealing to me, and I am sure it is not for you either. The Bible is not meant to be studied like you are studying for a history exam. It is something that should be discovered every time you open the Bible. So instead of Bible Study, let’s call it Bible Exploration!

Now both of my babies went through the bottle stage, Calvin is on the tail end of it, and they eventually learned how to feed themselves. In Hebrews that’s what it says we should do when exploring the Bible. Don’t be ashamed that you don’t know all the books of the Bible. You will eventually learn where each book is, and before you know it you will be flying all over the Bible. You grow in God’s word, just as you grow physically!

There are several ways to explore the Bible. I am going to give you a few to get started. The first, and my favorite way to study the Bible is by picking a topic. Love, sex, fear, healing, etc… Whatever you want to study, look it up and get after it. The internet makes this very easy! I use crosswalk.com quite abit when looking up topics. All you have to do is enter in a subject and it will shoot out a bunch of verses. The next way to study your Bible is like a book report. I am currently doing this with the book of Psalms. Ask yourself questions as you read through the book. What is going on? Who are the main characters? Who wrote this book? Alittle more research will go into this style, however, it can be pretty interesting getting lost in the stories of the Bible. The final bible exploration tactic that I am going to talk about is character studies. When I was youth pastor, I would find myself doing these types of explorations quite often. It can be like reading an autobiography about a famous person. The people of the Bible can teach us many lessons. Moses and Paul are two of my favorites. If you were going to start exploring characters, starting with either of these two individuals would be a splash hit.

I hope I have sparked your interest in exploring the Bible! The main thing is to start today. Don’t worry about being an expert. Just remember every baby starts out with a bottle, then they go to their hands, and finally they eat with silverware. You will be a baby Bible explorer at first, but before you know it you will be climbing the biggest mountains in the Bible!

Open Lines

April 19, 2010

Over the last few days, the topic of prayer has been at the top of my list. My daughter was very sick for a number of days, and as they were taking her to the hospital, my car was filled with prayer. So all of this praying got me thinking about not only my prayer life, but the prayer life of people around me.

What is prayer? Well, my definition of prayer is simple just a conversation with God. I truly mean a simple conversation. Many times I find myself talking to God just as I would be talking to my friends on the cell phone. After many of these best friend conversations with God, praying a really just second nature for me. However, it is not like that for everyone. Why is praying so difficult for some people? For most people, I believe it is because God is not tangible. You can’t see, feel, or physically touch God. This is a major road block to some.

Satan’s number one goal is his initial attack of a person is to knock out all communication between the person and God. If this is successful the person can not call for backup! Let me give you some methods to help keep this communication with God fresh and open.

Now for the old school Christians in the audience many of us remember the ACTS form of praying. ACTS stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. If you were like me when I first started my walk with Christ, I had no idea what some of those words mean! A new one that I just learned not to long ago, makes a little more sense to the common man. The first letter of each word, spells PARTS. This word consists of easier words such as praise, admit, request, thanks, and shut up. Now we all can understand those words!

So how does this PARTS Program work? It’s simple! Set aside a private prayer time, and just follow the leader. It would probably help if you had a notebook just for prayer. Use each sheet as a single day. Start with Praise. Sing or listen to your favorite praise song. Maybe even write down how great is your God. Step two is admit. I always admit my sins before God and ask Him to forgive me so I can come before God with a clean heart. Next is request. Ask for small things, big things, and everything in between. Put a date with it so you can go back to it and see the work God has done. Request is followed by thanks. Always be thankful for what God is doing in your life. Thank Him for the small and big things. Finally, shut up and listen! So many times we do all the speaking and don’t give God any room to speak. Be still and know that He is God!

Neither one of these formulas are magical! They are just methods to help guide you through your prayer life. Find what works for you and run with it. Don’t get frustrated with it and quit! That is exactly what Satan wants you to do!

Sold Out

March 14, 2010

Back in the day when I was a stud pitcher for the 1st Bank Eagles (Claremore American Legion Majors Baseball Team) I learned the lesson of being sold out for a cause. You see Claremore baseball had not see the likes of a successful state championship team in almost 20 years, and it seemed like this season was going to be no different. We had an up and coming coach, and the talent on the team was unharnessed. We plowed through the regular season with a .500 winning percentage, and not many believed we would go very far in the playoffs. However, as we struggled through the season our coach was developing a mighty force inside of us. He pushed us in practice to be better, he mentally prepared us for the task at hand, and he pulled a team with no direction together and made them believe they could defeat the Yankees! We were sold out. We believed we could win it all. That season proved to be a spring-board for Claremore baseball for the next decade. The 1st Bank Eagles made it to the state tournament that season, and we placed third. Only falling to the eventual National Champions.

So the question I want to ask you is, “Are you sold out for Jesus?” Do you stand when the crowd sits? So many times we talk a big game when it comes to our Savior, however, when it comes time to fight for Him we run. In Matthew 26: 57-75 Peter had the chance to make a major statement, however, because he was not completely sold out he ended up crumbling under the pressure. He was trying to live life in the middle. Living life in the middle will not get you to the state tournament. It will get you defeated by the lowest of opponents.

Revelation 3:15-16 says we are to be hot or cold. Not lukewarm! Those that play the hot/cold game will get spit from the Saviors mouth. Sounds pretty gross! God wants us to be sold out. He wants us to make the state tournament in life! He want us to be on fire for God. Peter learned that day that it is better to not even follow God than to follow Him halfway. So lets decide to be champions today! Be sold out for the cause for Christ!

Good Tree

January 22, 2010

In Matthew 12:33-37 it says that a good tree will produce good fruit, and a bad tree will produce bad fruit. How do you become a good tree? How do you become a bad tree? Well its pretty simple. What you consume will produce the tree of your choice. If you are constantly consuming filthy language, improper images, or anything damaging. You will produce the nastiest fruit of all. If you consume God’s word. You are going to produce the sweetest tasting fruit ever. Now let me tell you that if you are making the nasty sick fruit, and you know if you are, some day it is going to come back and bite you! The very last verse in this set tells us we will be condemned by the evil that comes out of our mouths. Think about that one. I am not perfect by no means, and I have said some pretty bad things. That really scares me! God is going to open the catalog of our words some day, and we are going to have to account for it. Wow!

You can straighten your ship if you are off course. Romans 12:2 says that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. Why not transform today? Are you sick of the bad fruit, the bad taste in your mouth? Set your eyes on God right now! The cleansing process will start and before to long you will see the goodness the our Jesus has for each and every one of us!

Garbage In (November Monthly Message)

December 9, 2009

Garbage In

There is this new group named “Tal and Acacia” they sing a song titled “Garbage In”. Now before we get started, lets talk about the story of Sampson in the book of Judges. He was the strongest man in the world, but he did have one weakness and her name was Delilah. Sampson wanted her to love him more than anything. She nagged and nagged Sampson about his strength! She filled him with junk, things like if you love me I will tell you the big secret. After all the garbage that she shoved in him, he finally broke and out came all the garbage. He lost every thing!

Now we are very similar to Sampson, “garbage in, garbage out”. When I was younger, many people tried to tear me down. After hearing this junk day after day you start to believe it. “Garbage in, Garbage out.” It wasn’t until a couple of my students introduced me to their older sister that things started to turn for me. The sister, which eventually became my wife, filled me with nothing but goodness. She helped me realize that I was worthy of my calling in life, and that it didn’t matter what others thought of me. Because of her the garbage turned to sunshine!

Don’t believe what the world throws at you. The world is not concerned with your well-being. Only one can truly help you take the garbage out, His name is Christ. Jesus gave me my wife, and He has someone or something that is totally going to change your world for the better. Just give Him a chance! He will not dissappoint!

Signs (October Monthly Message)

November 16, 2009

A long time ago when I was heavily pursuing my wife, I would go over to her house a couple of times a week (7 days actually). Sometimes we would stay up well into the early mornings watching movies. After one of those marathon nights, I was driving back to my house. It was late, and I want to get home to go night night! As I was rounded the corner, I passed the same old 35 mile an hour sign (going 45). Well, on this late night the Claremore police was on the prowl! As I passed the rec center, I caught a glimpse of someone parked on the other side of the building, and this wasn’t just someone, it was the CPD. So as everyone knows when you think you have been caught you go into prayer mode. I was on the God hotline asking Him to give me a break this time, and let the cop be blinded by my speeding. Obviously, God must have been in the bathroom because this policeman was hot on my tail, lights a flashing. So at that point, I first swallowed my heart then I pulled over. With sweaty palms I rolled my window down, and then was blinded by the oversized flash light of the policeman. I could not speak for seconds, I was paralyzed! Then the light subsided, and I saw the cop. At this moment, everything went back to normal because I recognized this guy. You see only a few years earlier, I had taught his son in school. On top of that, I had helped his son when he had fell and scraped his knee on the playground. So I knew I had a few brownie points with this guy! So he gave me the quick “slow down” speech, and told me to have a nice night. As he walked away, I am sure he could hear me screaming for joy!

Now we pass speed limit signs all the time! Do they make us go the correct speed? No! I have never witnessed a speed limit sign jump off a pole and make me go the correct speed limit. So if they don’t jump off their poles, what do they do? What are they? The speed limit sign is a symbol. It reminds us what to do!

God sent a rainbow in Genesis 9:8-17 as a symbol that He would never send a flood like that again. It’s like when we first get our driver’s license, we are entering an agreement with the state that we will obey the traffic signs. Then the state puts up signs as symbols to help us remember our agreement.

God uses symbols to remind us of deals we have made. In Bible times, usually the people would stack rocks on top of each other to help them remember. Now you can create your own alter without stacking up a bunch of rocks. For instance, I have a bracelet that has the words “Believe” and “Psalms 18” inscribed on it. It helps me remember that our God is a powerful God (not a whimpy Christian), and that we should always believe that He is going to come through for us. I also have a craft that stays in my bedroom that my daughter made for me that says, “To my dynamite dad”. When things get stressful, I look at that and it is a sign of the commit that I have with Delainey. So those are few examples of things that are signs or symbols in my life. What about you? Some people where bracelets, rings, necklaces, etc… to help them remember things from God.

Signs or symbols will change the way we live our life. They are not magical, but they do keep our focus on the things we need to be focused on. They are like the dreaded 35 mph speed limit sign. They don’t make us go 35! They do remind us what we should do and who God wants us to be!

Holy Jeans (September Monthly Message)

October 7, 2009

When I was a young man, back in the 80’s, I was a pretty cool cat. My mom would always make sure I had the clothes that all the other kids had. One thing that really stands out in my mind, was what my mom would do with our jeans. I was pretty much a stud in elementary, so what else do studs but play sports at recess. So as soon as that bell rang, you would see me sprinting to the playground to split up teams to play a little game of football. Now from time to time I would get sent to the ground, let me emphasize, “time to time”. I was rarely taken down! Some times when I fell to the ground, I would tear a hole in my jeans. Now if you know my mom, this just would work. She would never send her kid to school with a hole in their jeans. This was before jeans with holes in them were cool! So my mom would get out the patch work material and actually patch up the hole. What mom would do that? My mom did every time! Now the jeans look ok, but they were never just right. You could always tell something just didn’t match up. The new patch just didn’t blend in with the old denim. Now I tell you this story to make the comparison with Christians that try to blend Jesus with the culture we live in.

Matthew 9:16 says,”No one cuts up a fine silk scarf to patch old work clothes; you want fabrics that match.” Many times people get saved (ask Jesus into their heart), but still leave their partying as a part of their life. It’s like putting the fine scarf on the old clothes, it doesn’t match! Its like the Christian dating couple that thinks its alright to have sex because they are in love and they will some day be married, it doesn’t match. You see what eventually happens is the life in Christ will disappear and sin will grow like weeds. Before you know it the weeds take over your life.

2 Corinthians 5;17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” New life requires a new lifestyle. Whether you are a new Christian that is trying to rid your life of old habits or your already a Christian caught up in a web of sin, we must do whatever it takes to change the lifestyle. Are you still hangin with the friends that bring you down? Are you still telling dirty jokes? Anything that doesn’t fly with God is old patch work! When your with Jesus it’s like getting a new pair of jeans, no patches required!
